Nice. September 3, 2010 edel 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Piano black looks really nice but would have to often wipe of finger smudges. No problems with it so far and had it for almost a year. You can register with WD online and they are able to track your warranty info.
Good 1TB Drive. SmartWare... not good September 2, 2010 A. Dent (Minas Anor, GD) I would not exaggerate if I called myself a WD fan. I am currently using several Western Digital HDDs and I found them to be well built, quality, reliable products. As an 'External Hard Drive', WD is that way too (more below) but I found the SmartWare backup application that comes 'burned' on a solid state drive to be a dubious 'continuous backup solution' at best which HAD to be removed from my computer.
CONTENTS AND SPECS:
Out of the box you get:
- The MyBook HDD, in a well-ventilated, shiny-black plastic enclosure.
- AC adapter
- USB wire
- Quick installation guide
This is a USB 2.0 device, meaning that it operates at up to 480 Mbps (fast). However, if your computer has a USB 1.1 port, you can still use the drive, it's only 40 times slower at 12 Mbps.
On the back of the drive, besides the USB port and the power connector, there is a power button (not very responsive) and a Kensignton security slot. On the front, you have a power light, a 'lock' indicator and an illuminated capacity gauge that shows you how full your drive is in increments of 25%.
MyBook comes formatted as NTFS but it's easy to repartition and reformat it if needed.
As an external AC-powered USB 2.0 HDD, MyBook Essential performs flawlessly. In fact, it's already attached to my media server and it's doing great there.
THE TROUBLE WITH SMARTWARE
The first time you plug the drive into your computer, you will see TWO new drives popping up: the expected 900 GB or so MyBook and another smaller drive labelled SmartWare. The second drive hosts WD's software that's should provide you worry-free, safe, continuous backup of all your non-system files and even categorize them as 'music, documents, mail, and so forth' in addition to the ability to password-protect your drive.
I've tested this on a Lenovo T400 Windows 7 Enterprise laptop with 4GB or RAM and a pretty speedy dual-core CPU and, shortly thereafter, I decided to remove SmartWare from my computer and use WD's MyBook as a 'dumb' 1 TB drive on my media server.
SmartWare does, in fact back up your computer's files but, in my case, the 'worry free' promise did not materialize. The backup was no longer working when I re-attached my laptop to its docking station and it could only restart after I rebooted my machine. In addition, even though set to perform backups only when the computer was 'idle' the overhead seemed to be enormous. It was near-impossible to use my computer while the WD drive was attached and SmartWare was running. Worse, apps were freezing, crashing or wouldn't even start and my previously reliable Windows 7 machine gave up completely. Once I uninstalled SmartWare, everything was back to normal again.
For anyone who doesn't mind the overhead, besides the backup, SmartWare also allows you to password-protect your drive. This may be a needed feature for some users but, at least as an NTFS-formatted drive, there are many ways of protecting one's data besides password-protecting the drive so that feature should not be missed.
As far as SmartWare's features are concerned, once the backup was complete I attempted to restore 'something'. Restoring ALL files or manually selecting the files or folders I wanted restored was easy. However, all attempts at searching for a specific file or even sorting the backup files by name, size or 'last modified' failed. I am not sure whether this was a failure of design or the application simply could not fulfill my request because it was constantly on the verge of crashing. It was good to know that you could have several versions of the same file stored on the drive, ready to be restored but, sadly this did not work for me.
SOME PRACTICAL BITS
As I mentioned already, you are going to see TWO drives when you attach the MyBook to your system. SmartWare will allow you to make the SmartWare drive invisible but... you must install SmartWare first. You will also need SmartWare if you want easy access to the online 80-page manual.
Luckily, there is a way to 'hide' the SmartWare drive without actually installing the software - see my comment to this review for the URL. I will also provide there the path to the drive's manual so that you may be able to access it directly.
MY RATING
MyBook is a great 1 TB USB 2.0 drive. I consider Western Digital to be a trustworthy HARDWARE brand and, so far, I haven't been disappointed. The software... I can do without. In fact, I am much better off without it. Since it does not appear that WD is charging any significant premium for the SmartWare 'feature', I will still rate this as a 2-star, translating in "I don't like it", for the time I wasted on recovering from the initial SmartWare installation. My rating would have been higher if SmartWare were an easier to avoid problem - as in not forcing me to seek ways of removing that 'ghost' drive. The drive is getting TWO stars (not one) because, software aside, it IS a good drive and I'm using it.
Works, but virtuall zero ability to customize settings. August 29, 2010 R. Moroney (Indiana) Picked up this Western Digital 1 Tb backup drive from the Vine program. It works ok well for it's intended purpose: backing up the files designated by WD on your PC's hard drive.
But that's the only thing it can do, no syncronization capability, no custom folder backups.
My number one complaint is that you must log into each account under Windows 7 to allow it to back up the files there. Major pain, this factor defeats the entire purpose of the automation for me because I want to use it primarily on my laptop, then backup the family PC once a week or so, not an easy chore due to this issue.
New changes in Smartware- WD My Book August 24, 2010 Andhra Choudhary (TN usa) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this Drive without reading all these reviews at a local chain store. I am pleasantly surprised by Smartware, which is the proprietary WD backup software that comes with these External Hard Drives, i had bought this drive based on my past experience with WD. My real choices were Seagate vs Western Digital, and based on past experience even though Seagate gives a 5 year warranty it covers only the Drive and not the enclosure(which means even though the drives are well built, the cheap enclosures get fried and then you dont get any warranty or replacement- this soured my appetite for Seagate).
I have noticed that a lot of the negative reviews on the site are based on the fact that you can't turnoff Virtual Cd that is installed automatically along with these drives, well there is a new Smartware and driver update that ALLOWS you to turn off the Virtual CD(so this is anon-issue currently as of Aug 2010). The Smartware software seems pretty fast and was able to backup around 65GB in about 20mins, which is pretty fast. I am a little dissatisfied with the lack of more customizing options for the Backup software, it allways runs in the back and backsup changes that are made to your computer(you can enable it to only run when the comp is idle). I have taken a star off for the lack of customization for the Smartware software. Smartware isn't bad, it just could have been better, given the premium price.
If you are a person who doesn't care about the details and just wants a drive that backsup everything on the PC/Laptop, then is is perfect for you. Otherwise you can buy a WD elements, which is a regular Hard Drive without any fancy software(and is 15 bucks cheaper).
Zero issues for me, and very fast backup August 19, 2010 Flaherty 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I set this up to backup my hard drive on my computer. I have a couple of other NAS and external hard driver to store irreplaceable files such as family photos, videos, and business information and I was most impressed with the speed of backup on the Western Digital My Book. It's far faster than any other option I've ever used. Rather than taking several hours, all of my files were backed up in well under one hour. I even (gasp) dropped it once and breathed a sigh of relief after opening the WD SmartWare to double check that everything was still there and accessible.
The My Book is about the size of a thick paperback book, but shorter when placed upright. I've had the drive horizontal and upright, and it tends to run hotter when horizontal. Why that is I don't know, but I assume it's that way because heat rises and the vents are at the top of the drive.
The drive arrives securely suspended between molded plastic holders inside of a box. The drive can be password protected, and I find the drive is not a resource hog like other backup systems I've used. The WD SmartWare software is completely self-explanatory and easy to use. I think this would be a great way for college students to back up their files easily and without a lot of technical know-how.
So far, I am completely satisfied with this drive, and should I encounter problems in the future, I'll be sure to update the review.
