4 out of 5 stars Not Bad For The Money   February 27, 2010

This is the first network drive I have ever purchased but my 3rd Western Digital Drive. I have been very happy with my previous WD drives so they were the first company I went to when I decided to buy a network drive. It was very easy to set up and I had it done within minutes. The itunes server works great and I have had no problems whatsoever with streaming music of videos. It is quiet, keeps cool, and is very attractive on my desk!

I highly recommend this product to anyone who would like an intro level network drive with a great deal of reliable storage space.

5 out of 5 stars Great value for the amount of storage you get!   February 27, 2010
K. Eckert (Minneapolis, MN)
This is a pretty nice product for the price. There are more expensive NAS servers out there that have more features; I currently also own a QNap Nas that has dual drives that are hot swappable, but that costs quite a bit more, and I wouldn't recommend it for a normal person. The World Book is actually really easy to set up, basically just plug in to the network and run the software on the disk that they provide. This will set up the basics for storage. There is also software on the disk that will automatically back up data that changes on other computers directly to the NAS.

This world book also has a media server on it, which I have found to be really nice for viewing pictures and listening to music on my PS3 which is in a different room of the house. The picture navigation isn't the fastest thing, but it isn't too bad if the folders are small. Music playback is also very nice, I have all of my music as variable rate MP3s, and i have had no problems playing any of them.

Other than that the size of the storage is pretty good for the price.

1 out of 5 stars "DON'T Put Your LIfe On It"   February 18, 2010

Before purchasing this product, I read the reviews. I was pretty excited when I got it because it looks pretty cool, quiet, and I won't have to turn on my pc to share my media files with other PCs at home. I'm computer literate guy and a web developer professionally. But making this drive to work was frustrating. Followed instructions to make sure I'm not missing anything. I was able to see the drive via my network but the WD software could not see it. I was able to go the admin section, updated the firmware, changed my password and was able to map the a drive to point to this external public shared folders. So far so good...then I copied some music and photos...about 1 gb worth to test the speed and reliability. That's when all hell broke loose. It took f-o-r-e-v-e-r to copy the files and it finally froze. Restarted the PC and saw some files I copied but clicking on any files rendered my windows explorer useless as it just froze. I copied 2 small photo files to test again...successful. Clicked on those files and froze again. Turned off my firewall just to make sure it's not the root cause but result was the same. I could not read or delete any of the files but copy files into the drive.

Finally, after spending hours trying to make it work, I called support. Talked to semi-educated support who says it MUST be mapped to drive Y...it happens to be that I'm already using it. Told him that drive mapping doesn't work that way. I mapped it to drive W instead. Troubleshooted the issue with support and no progress. I was then escalated to the next support level. Tried a few things with no success. Support finally says it's the firmware and return it to the store I got it from. Considering I got the latest firmware version, it must be pretty bad.

Here's my pros and cons...and bottom line.

Pros:
Small, nice looking, quiet. Concept is good.

Cons:
problem with firmware or drive. A lot of reviews I've read says it's pretty slow...I wouldn't know as I never got the opportunity to make it fully work.

Bottom Line:
I wouldn't take their tag line "Put your life on it" seriously unless you don't mind loosing your "life's" data. I don't recommend buying this product. But for whatever reason, the external drives just don't have a lot of overall very good reviews compared to the internal counterpars. I'm returning it and probably won't buy another one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Alternative to Time Capsule   February 18, 2010

I Bought this for use with time machine on my mac. I initially wanted to get a time capsule but read some poor reviews on overheating issues and decided to search around for alternatives. I read a few reviews for this hard drive that said it wasn't compatible with time machine, but it works perfectly fine.

Setup wasn't too difficult, although it did take me a little while to figure out that I had to log in to a certain user on the device to make my time machine work. The user guide included on the cd does a pretty good job explaining everything to do and includes pictures to make sure you're doing the right thing. Once I set up everything perfectly, my time machine recognized the drive and backing up started by itself.

It's very slow compared to a wired hard drive, but that's to be expected. Wireless transmissions simply aren't fast and it takes a long time to transfer files, so if you purchase this just realize it might take a few days of continuous backing up for all your files to be saved. Once your initial back-up is complete, it won't take long to back up anything else in time machine because it automatically backs up any changes you made every hour. This makes the slow transfer speed nearly unnoticeable unless you make a big change.

It's important to note that this is not a time capsule and you must plug this into a wireless router for it to work like this.

Pros:
- works perfectly once set up
- automatic wireless backups with time machine
- wireless media streaming to xbox or similar devices (haven't messed with that yet)
- more reliable than a time capsule

Cons:
- slow initial backup, probably comparable to time capsule
- initial set-up for time machine may need a little trial and error

I'm giving this 5 stars because I couldn't find anything better and it saved me $150 by not getting a time capsule.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of my time   February 17, 2010

I'm fairly technical, my experience is that it takes a lot of fiddling with your network and firewalls to get this product to connect to client PC's, and then it's very flakey, works for a few days and then doesn't, I'm not sure why, I don't think WD knows either. Ultimately its lack of reliability defeats the purpose and leaves its owner frustrated with all the wasted time to get this unit functioning as designed..
